Generic USB Cable Fix 100% Working, and 100% Success Rate!!

Hello all. I've lurked on this forum since I bought my Nook HD+, and been trying to find a CERTAIN, ABSOLUTE solution to the problem that 99% of us have when we buy a generic USB cord for charging or data transfer.

I'm a retired military electronic tech, and I have been doing my absolute best to figure out why the generic cords usually don't work on our Nooks, and the genuine cords always seem to work. Electronically, they are the exact same. I've read many threads where people say there are resistors in the OEM cable, or that the data lines need to be shorted. NOT TRUE, believe me, I've tried them ALL. I've disassembled the OEM cables, and the generic cables, and there are no resistors, no shorted data lines, nothing. Only three active lines in the cable, both the OEM and the generic, so electrically speaking, they are identical.

Being what I consider to be a competent electronic tech, this has puzzled me for a long time. But I've never given up on trying to find a solution. Well, today, a major breakthrough!! I finally stopped looking at the electrical elements, and started looking at the physical elements. And there was the answer, 100% true, and 100% fix for all those generic cables. I joined the forum just to post this solution for everyone to be able to use, and avoid having to pay high prices for the OEM cables.

Here is the solution: The male connector that plugs into the Nook on the OEM cable is exactly 2mm longer than the generic cable plug. I'm talking about the metal part that actually inserts into the tablet. When I first found this out, I just couldn't believe that had anything to do with the problem. But I figured, what the heck, I've got all these generic cables, and so I trimmed back 2mm of the black plastic shoulder that surrounds the metal part of the connector. This enabled the generic plug to be inserted 2mm more into the Nook. And what do you know?? SUCCESS!

I was completely stunned. So, I did the same thing to another generic cable, with the same result, it worked!!! Orange light came on, the tablet says charging, and indeed, the tablet charges up to full, then the light turns green, just as it should.

I assure you all, this is not a prank or anything of the sort. This is a true and valid answer for everyone who has been troubled by this situation. I cannot figure out why the generic companies making these cords do not know this is the answer to all the customer complaints!

So, there you have it. Try it, you'll see for yourself, that you can now buy a $2.99 cable and after trimming the shoulder back 2mm with a razor knife or similar, it will work just fine for you.

Since I'm a new member, and first time poster, I ask that you please post in this thread with your results when you do this mod. It has worked for me 5 times, with all 5 of the generic cords that I got for testing. As they say, " Try it, you'll like it!"

Thanks!
